A Palmerston North local has stunned friends, family, and at least one former English teacher after correctly spelling “Palmerston North” on the first attempt.

The discovery reportedly came while the resident was filling out an online form and, after years of writing “Palmy”, “Palmerston Nth”, and occasionally “Palmerson North”, decided to attempt the full name.

“I just slowed down and really looked at the word,” the resident said. “Then I realised there’s actually a ‘t’ in Palmerston. I don’t know how long that’s been there.”

Witnesses described the moment as “quietly historic”, with one nearby flatmate saying the room fell silent once the correct spelling appeared on screen.

“At first we thought autocorrect had done it,” they said. “But no, it was all them.”

Local language experts say the achievement could mark a turning point for residents across the region, many of whom have avoided the issue entirely by referring to the city simply as “Palmy”.

However, officials are urging caution.

“While this is a promising step, we don’t want people getting ahead of themselves,” one council spokesperson said. “There are still significant spelling challenges ahead, including Manawatū, Papaioea, and explaining to outsiders that Feilding is not spelt Fielding.”

At the time of publication, the resident was reportedly preparing for their next major challenge: correctly pronouncing “Awapuni” without asking someone else first.
